Getting businesses to offer assistance to kids in the local area who are looking to improve their maths is admirable and should be encouraged.
However, lets not forget that there are countless amazing 'small businesses' in the local area who could also help.
Over the last year, the number of people starting on an apprenticeship scheme has risen by 50%. They offer a viable alternative to people who don't want to carry on in formal education and are looking for their first full time job, as well as people who are looking to retrain.

Yesterday saw the first opportunity fair to be held in Portsmouth by the Shaping the Future of Portsmouth group, organised by the Education & Skills work stream. I was there throughout the day meeting & greeting people. Here is my write up of events.
In September 2011 I joined the Education & Skills work stream (as part of Shaping the Future of Portsmouth). Here I provide a bit of background to what we are doing and why I joined.
The Portsmouth Opportunity Fair takes places this Sunday, 16th October at the Portsmouth Guildhall and highlights the career opportunities available to school children in Portsmouth aged from 10 to 13 years old.
